For several years, artist and author Peter C. Stone concentrated on a large body of work about the story of the California condor. Having painted in the Southwest during the '70's and '80's, and again in 1993, he was already familiar with the rugged terrain and blazing light.
His luminous oils are intricately layered and rendered, abounding with mythological as well as historical references. They comprise a well-rounded exhibition of intimate perspectives and vast landscapes that entice adults and children to go beyond the bounds of a picture book. Fascinating reflections and shadows reveal their secrets through literary and visual symbols; clouds and trees contain endless possibilities for imaginative minds of all ages. These captivating images celebrate our natural heritage and challenge us to consider the values of the stewardship, whether for lands, creatures, or cultures.
In exploring the notion of extinction, Peter C. Stone's exhibition Beyond Condor Magic asks us to regard our own mortality and, indeed, the potential of our very brief lives.
